  1. Peel and core the apples. Cut into 1½" x ½" 'chips'. Beat the egg.
  2. Dip the 'chips' in the egg and dredge with flour
  3. Heat the oil to 350°F. Deep fry for 2½ minutes, then drain.
  4. Heat the sugar and the 2 tbsp vegetable in a flameproof dish. When the sugar has melted, add the water, followed by the syrup.
